  Advantages of Copper Core Cables

  1. Good ductility: The ductility of copper alloy is 20~40%, and the ductility of electrical copper is over 30%, while the ductility of aluminum alloy is only 18%.

  2. High strength: The allowable stress at normal temperature is 7~28% higher than that of aluminum. Especially the stress at high temperature, there is a world of difference between them.

  3. Fatigue resistance: Aluminum is easy to break after repeated bending, while copper is not. In terms of elastic modulus, copper is also about 1.7~1.8 times higher than aluminum.

  4. Large current carrying capacity: Due to its low resistivity, the current carrying capacity (maximum current that can pass through) of copper core cables with the same cross-sectional area is about 30% higher than that of aluminum core cables.

  5. Low voltage loss: Due to the low resistivity of copper core cables, under the same current in the same section. The voltage drop of copper core cable is small.   8. Oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance: The joints of copper core cables have stable performance and will not cause accidents due to oxidation. The joints of aluminum core cables are unstable and often cause accidents due to increased contact resistance and oxidation heating. Therefore, the accident rate is much higher than that of copper core cables.

  9. Construction convenience:

  1. Low price: The price of copper bar is 3.5 times that of aluminum bar, and the proportion of copper is 3.3 times that of aluminum, so aluminum core cables are much cheaper than copper core cables, suitable for low-capital projects or temporary power supply.

  2. Light weight: The weight of aluminum core cable is 40% of that of copper core cable, and the cost of construction and transportation is low.

  3. Oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance: Aluminum reacts with oxygen in the air to quickly form an oxide film, which can prevent further oxidation, so aluminum conductor is the material for high-voltage, large-section, and large-span overhead power transmission.

  Although aluminum core cables are cheap, copper core cables have outstanding advantages in cable power supply, especially in underground cable power supply. Underground copper cable power supply has the characteristics of low accident rate, corrosion resistance, high reliability, and convenient construction and maintenance. This is also the reason why copper cables are mainly used for underground cable power supply in China.
