What are the reasons for using copper core cables for underground cables?
The use of copper core cables for underground cables is a necessary choice. This is because urban power grid construction has some characteristics different from those in rural and remote areas. The use of copper core cables instead of aluminum core or aluminum alloy cables is currently the only choice in urban power grid construction for the following reasons:
The exclusive use of copper core cables for underground cables is a necessary choice, due to certain characteristics of urban power grid construction that differ from those in rural and remote areas. The use of copper core cables, to the exclusion of aluminum core or aluminum alloy cables, is currently the only option in urban power grid construction, for the following reasons:
I. The characteristics of copper core cables meet the basic requirements of urban power construction.
The basic requirements for urban underground cable construction are safety, reliability, energy efficiency, environmental protection, and comprehensive cost reduction. Compared with aluminum alloy and aluminum, copper core cables have unparalleled advantages in the selection of underground cables:
1. Low resistivity: The resistivity of aluminum cables is 1.68 times that of copper core cables.
2. Good ductility: The ductility of copper alloy is 20-40%, the ductility of electrical copper is over 30%, and the ductility of aluminum alloy is only 18%.
3. High strength: The allowable stress at room temperature is 7-28% higher for copper than for aluminum. The difference is even greater at high temperatures.
4. Fatigue resistance: Aluminum is easily fractured by repeated bending, while copper is not. In terms of elasticity, copper is also about 1.7-1.8 times higher than aluminum.
5. Good stability and corrosion resistance: Copper cores are resistant to oxidation and corrosion, while aluminum cores are susceptible to oxidation and corrosion.
II. The choice of copper core cables meets the needs of urban users.
With the process of urbanization, some obvious changes have occurred on the client side:
1. The demand for power supply reliability is increasing. For example, for some high-rise buildings, power outages are almost unacceptable.
2. The demand for power quality is increasing. In urban power supply, not only are power outages unacceptable, but even some power fluctuations can have an impact on users, as the widespread use of instruments by users places higher demands on power quality.
3. Energy saving and environmental protection needs. Currently, more and more urban energy-saving and environmental protection devices or new power supply schemes need to be integrated into the power grid, which poses new challenges and requirements for the power grid's carrying capacity and power transmission quality.
All these changes require the power supply to provide higher quality and more stable power within a limited space to continuously meet the needs of users. Therefore, the use of copper core cables in the limited underground space of the city is a necessary choice.
III. Underground resource limitations lead to the only choice of copper cables
Aluminum alloy cables need to increase their cross-sectional area by 1.6 times that of copper cables to achieve the same conductivity as copper cables. This not only makes the cost completely uncompensated for the cost of underground resources, but also many places do not have the underground space to implement it.
In addition, some research has also been done on aluminum cables, but no data shows that aluminum cables have reached the safety, reliability, and power transmission performance of copper cables. Under this background, copper core cables are still the preferred choice for urban cables at present.
