Development history of power cables
Power cables are cables used for transmitting and distributing electrical energy. They are commonly used in urban underground power grids, power plant outgoing lines, internal power supply of industrial and mining enterprises, and cross-river and underwater power transmission lines.
Power cables are cables used for transmitting and distributing electrical energy. They are commonly used in urban underground power grids, power plant outgoing lines, internal power supply of industrial and mining enterprises, and cross-river and underwater power transmission lines.
In power lines, the proportion of cables is gradually increasing. Power cables are cable products used to transmit and distribute high-power electrical energy in the main lines of the power system, including various voltage levels from 1 to 500 kV and above, and various insulated power cables.
Power cables have been in use for over a hundred years. In 1879, American inventor T.A. Edison created a cable by wrapping jute around a copper rod, inserting it into an iron pipe, and then filling it with a bitumen mixture. He laid this cable in New York, pioneering underground power transmission. The following year, the British inventor Callender invented bitumen-impregnated paper-insulated power cables. In 1889, the British inventor S.Z. Ferranti laid a 10 kV oil-impregnated paper-insulated cable between London and Deptford. In 1908, a 20 kV cable network was built in Britain. Power cables are finding increasingly wider application. In 1911, Germany laid a 60 kV high-voltage cable, marking the beginning of the development of high-voltage cables. In 1913, German M. Hochstetter developed a phase-shielded cable, which improved the internal electric field distribution of the cable and eliminated the tangential stress on the surface of the insulation, becoming a milestone in the development of power cables. In 1952, Sweden laid a 380 kV ultra-high voltage cable at a northern power plant, realizing the application of ultra-high voltage cables. By the 1980s, 1100 kV and 1200 kV ultra-high voltage power cables had been produced.
