  Water ingress easily affects the normal use of power cables. First, we must recognize the harm of water intrusion. Generally speaking, after water intrusion, under the action of an electromagnetic field, a phenomenon of "water tree aging" will occur. After the formation of water trees, the electric field at the location of water tree formation is prone to change, reducing the cable's insulation performance. When it becomes conductive, the cable will be punctured, seriously affecting the stability of power supply.

  How to solve cable water ingress:

  1. After the cable is laid, immediately make the cable head and complete the wiring to eliminate hidden dangers in the bud.

  2. If the power cable only has water ingress at both ends, simply cut off both ends and reconnect the two ends of the power cable.

  3. If there is an obvious water ingress point on the cable, the cable should be cut near the water ingress point to make an intermediate joint.

  5. Special hot nitrogen gas is used for pressure drying treatment inside the cable. Generally, there is no such professional equipment.

  Several reasons for the aging of power cables

  (1) Power cable aging causes: External force damage. According to the operational analysis of recent years, especially in the coastal defense areas with rapid economic development, many cable failures are caused by mechanical damage, such as non-standard construction during cable laying and installation, which easily causes mechanical damage; civil construction on directly buried cables easily damages cables in operation. Sometimes, if the damage is not serious, it may take months or even years for the damaged part to decompose and form a fault. Sometimes, serious damage will cause short-circuit faults, directly affecting the safe production of cables and power users.

  (2) Reasons for cable aging: Insulation dampness. This situation is also common, generally occurring at the cable joints buried underground or in drainage pipes. For example, if the cable joint is not made according to the standard, and the joint is made in a humid climate, the joint will be submerged or mixed with water vapor. Over time, under the action of the electric field, water branches will form, gradually destroying the cable's insulation strength and causing failures.

  (3) Reasons for cable aging: Chemical corrosion. If the cable is directly buried in an area with acid-base effects, the cable's armor, lead sheath, or outer sheath will be corroded. The protective layer will suffer chemical or electrolytic corrosion for a long time, leading to protective layer failure, reduced insulation, and cable failure.

  (4) Power cable aging: Long-term overload operation. Due to the thermal effect of the current, when the load current passes through the cable, it will inevitably cause the conductor to heat up. At the same time, the skin effect of the charge, the eddy current loss of the steel armor, and the dielectric loss will also generate additional heat, increasing the cable temperature. During long-term overload operation, excessive temperature will accelerate insulation aging and even cause insulation breakdown. Especially in hot summers, the temperature rise of the cable often leads to the first breakdown of the weak insulation of the cable, so there are more cable failures in summer.
